Today, and another day previously, I saw someone on Twitter get jumped on for simply tweeting about an upcoming trip to Target. I’m sick to death of this, and I’m not going to stay quiet about it anymore.
Look, the person Target donated to sounds like a pretty lousy person, I’ll give you that. He’d never in a million years get my vote. And yes, Target thoroughly apologized for this “error in judgment” and have vowed to take a closer look at where their donation money goes. Maybe that’s not enough, maybe it is. Who are we to decide?
But what really tans my hide is this: taking something that’s supposed to be this pure, clean thing – this community of writers, parents, non-writers, non-parents, PEOPLE, CONNECTING, which results in us helping absolve this all-too-common feeling of loneliness, especially with parents – and tarnishing it with their hatefulness. Do you really think that spewing your hatred and vitriol at someone is REALLY going to do anything but make you look like a jackass?
So what if this person shops at Target? Maybe they are uninformed. Maybe they don’t understand. Maybe they just prefer Target to W*lmart. Or, God forbid, THEY JUST DON’T CARE. Why can’t we just keep our nastiness and high-horses to ourselves?

Well said! I agree. Sometimes I think people enjoy jumping on someone else for not doing it “their way”. I don’t know the whole Target story but I do like the store. I continue to shop there.
Hear freaking hear.
What about the person is aware of the situation, yet can’t afford to shop anywhere other than Target/Walmart? Is the person with the Very Important Opinion going to start pitching in for the weekly grocery bill?
People need to pull their heads out of their arses, get over themselves, and learn that the best way to get their point across does not involve belittling someone else.
YES. EXACTLY. If you are going to tell X person that they can’t shop here, than you’d better be ante-ing up for their groceries at Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s, then.
THANK YOU!! I live in the area that this is all going down, and it is getting NASTY. The remarks that have come down from so many people are disgusting, and they make me ashamed to say I love here.
I have said this, and I will say it to anyone that will listen: I don’t care where they donate their money. Every company donates to many organizations. Every company has that right, and the right to do so without retribution. I don’t agree with my husbands politics and all of his donations BUT that is the joy of living where we do. We have the freedom to support whatever canidate we choose, whatever person or organization we choose. That is something that I love.
Thank you SO much for saying this!!!
AMEN!!!!
I shop at Target because it’s WAY cheaper than several of the alternatives. I can’t afford to shop anywhere else and unless these people are willing to pay my grocery bills for me, shut it. I don’t go to W*lmart often because the closest one to us is nasty and I just can’t do it. So I go to Target. Those that don’t like it can deal!
err….my name is Jen, and this is the rock I live under. Off to google to figure out what’s up with this. Especially since I’m NOT a fan of wal-mart, and avoid it if I can.
I don’t know the story, but I definitely think people can push unwarranted opinions out there way too easily.
